State game areas

Michigan has a system of publicly owned lands managed for wildlife habitat, wildlife watching and hunting. There are more than 100 units in the game and wildlife system covering more than 340,000 acres. Explore state game areas.

Some units encompass very large areas, with the largest being the Allegan State Game Area at 51,250 acres (20,740 ha) or 80 square miles (210 km²).

Camping in a state forest

Backpacking or car camping (also known as dispersed camping) is permitted on state forest land as long as your site is located more than one mile from a state forest campground. It's free of charge.

Visit www.recreation.gov to search for federal lands in your area. The site includes information about land managed by the National Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Land Reclamation. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also administers millions of acres of public land.

You can now use rifles in southern Michigan

The safety zone applies to hunting only.

Michigan does not have BLM land but plenty of forest service land. Most of these public lands are located in the northern half of the lower peninsula and through the upper peninsula. If you are really looking to get away from it all look in the upper peninsula (the UP) as it is very remote.

Boondocking is camping without any hookups outside developed campgrounds. Federal agencies refer to boondocking as dispersed camping. Other terms used to describe boondocking include dry camping and off-grid camping.

Today, RVers use the term boondocking to mean dry camping (no hookups) on undeveloped land, usually public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management or National Forest Service.
